What Is A Sealed Lead Acid Battery?
Although sealed lead acid battery have been available in the market for a long time, not many people know about it because it is commonly sold and used in the industrial areas. Sealed lead acid battery is one of the oldest rechargeable battery which has high surge currents, which means it has a high relatively power-to-weight ratio.
Unlike normal lead-acid battery, sealed lead acid battery is designed with a low voltage potential to prevent reaching gas-generating state during charge and water depletion. Sealed lead acid battery are easy to maintain and less expensive. However, it is usually bulky and heavy (can weight a few pounds).
Another note to take is sealed lead acid batteries are not designed for deep discharge. They have large number of thin plates which is designed for maximum surface area. Maximum output from the batteries will cause damage and repeated deep discharges will result in capacity loss and premature failure.
There are 2 different types of lead acid battery: normal sealed lead acid battery and valve regulated lead acid battery.
To maintain sealed lead acid battery and keep it at good condition, you need to:
1. Charge regularly. This could prevent sulfation.
2. Avoid repeated deep discharges.
3. Avoid operating it at elevated ambient temperatures.
